I have been a member of the Professional Photographers of America (PPA) for more than 15 years. Before becoming a professional member, I attended PPA conventions as an aspiring photographer. Throughout my career, the organization has played a significant role in my development by providing outstanding education, networking opportunities, business resources, and equipment and liability insurance. I recommend PPA to photographers at every stage of their career.
While PPA represents photographers from many specialties, architectural photography has traditionally been a small niche within the association. That’s one of the reasons having one of my architectural images selected for the cover of the March 2021 issue of Professional Photographer magazine means so much to me.
It remains the accomplishment I am most proud of in my career. Seeing an architectural photograph featured on the cover of PPA’s flagship publication felt like recognition not only of my work, but of the genre itself. The image was created while photographing a newly completed luxury home in Houston’s Tanglewood neighborhood for my client, Ruthie Porterfield.
There are moments when you look through the viewfinder and instinctively know a photograph has the potential to be something special. Those are the moments that remind me to slow down, set up the additional equipment, refine the composition, and put in the extra effort. You never know when one image may become the defining photograph of your career.
