MORE THAN JUST A DRONE

I’m Patrick Bertolino, a Houston-based photographer with over 25 years behind the camera, using aerial photography as part of a complete approach to photographing a property. I’m not a drone operator—I’m a photographer composing from the air.

I’ve been doing this long before drones became standard. At one point, I was mounting a camera to a pool skimmer just to get 30 feet higher and understand how a property reads from above. That perspective still drives how I shoot today—focused on clarity, composition, and how a property is actually understood from above.

Modern drones—especially with the imaging advancements that came after DJI acquired Hasselblad—are capable of true professional results. But that only matters if you’re applying real photographic discipline: composition, light, and intent.

Every flight is planned with safety, conditions, and the subject in mind. I follow FAA best practices and approach aerial work the same way I approach any shoot—methodical, controlled, and focused on getting clean, usable images.

EXPERIENCE YOU CAN TRUST

As a Master Photographer (M.Photog.), FAA Part 107 Certified Remote Pilot, and U.S. military veteran, I bring discipline, adaptability, and professionalism to every aerial shoot.

I didn’t come up through a classroom—I learned by doing. My career started in a one-hour photo lab and developed through years of hands-on work in Houston studios, building a foundation in light, composition, and client needs that carries through to aerial photography today.

Every flight is planned and executed with the same attention to detail I bring to ground-based photography. I handle airspace, timing, and conditions so the process stays smooth and the results stay consistent.

While anyone can operate a drone, composing a useful image from the air takes experience. I approach aerial photography the same way I approach any assignment—planned, intentional, and focused on delivering images that work.

WHAT AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY ACTUALLY SHOWS

Aerial photography adds context that ground-level images can’t provide. It shows how a property sits, how it’s accessed, and how it relates to everything around it.

From above, you can clearly see roads, neighboring buildings, and surrounding development—things that are often implied at ground level but not fully understood.

For commercial properties, aerial images help illustrate layout, parking, traffic flow, and proximity to key anchors or infrastructure. For real estate, they provide a clear understanding of the lot, boundaries, and neighborhood context that buyers expect to see.

Drone photography is most effective when it answers questions—how do you get there, what’s nearby, and how does the property function as a whole. When used correctly, it becomes one of the most useful images in the set, not just an extra.

I provide aerial photography in Houston as part of a complete shoot, making sure each image contributes to a clear, accurate representation of the property.

WHERE AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY IS USED

Aerial photography is used across a wide range of projects, but its role is always the same—providing context that helps people understand a property quickly and clearly.

Commercial Properties: Aerial images show site layout, parking, access points, and proximity to surrounding businesses or infrastructure. They’re often the most useful images for brokers, investors, and marketing teams.

Real Estate Listings: Drone photography helps buyers understand the lot, boundaries, and neighborhood context—especially for larger homes, unique properties, or listings where location is a key selling point.

Apartment Communities: Aerial coverage highlights building layout, amenities, and how the property fits within the surrounding area—giving prospects a clearer sense of the full community.

Industrial & Construction: From warehouses to active job sites, aerial photography provides a clear overview of scale, progress, and site organization that can’t be captured from the ground.

In most cases, aerial photography isn’t a standalone service—it’s part of a complete shoot, used where it adds the most value.

HOW I APPROACH AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY

Before the drone ever leaves the ground, I’m looking at the property the same way I would for any shoot—studying layout, light, surroundings, and what needs to be communicated in the final images.

I’m not just flying up and taking pictures. I’m choosing angles that make sense, keeping lines clean and level, and making sure each image serves a purpose within the overall set.

Timing matters just as much from the air as it does on the ground. I pay close attention to sun position, shadows, and activity around the property so the images feel clear and intentional—not rushed or random.

Aerial coverage is integrated into the shoot, not treated as a separate add-on. The goal is always the same—create a consistent set of images that work together and accurately represent the property.
